Doctors/Health
There is a health centre just before Max’s supermarket,
where a qualified nurse will offer advice. Visiting
Scarborough hospital is to be avoided - there are long
delays before you are seen, apparently. We haven’t had to do
it, but have decided that in an emergency we would head for
the Hilton or Coco Reef Hotel and pay privately to see their
resident doctor.
Mosquito repellents are a good idea. We buy those that have
50% Deet because there have been a few instances of dengue
fever - now found in the Caribbean, Florida, Mexico, and
South America, as well as all of the Far East. There is a
very low risk of catching it, but be aware that it is only
carried by day time biting mosquitoes and the risk goes up
in highly populated areas with the possibility of poor
sanitation.
For advice on vaccinations etc we suggest you talk to your
doctor. Make sure your polio and tetanus are up to date. We
were recently advised by our GP to vaccinate against
hepatitis A (after 10 years of being completely lax).
