Living In The Landscape
Castara village lies on the west coast of Tobago,
just 40
minutes from the airport. It is a delightful
small fishing village and is situated on the very edge of the rainforest in an
undeveloped region, facing the wonderful sunsets over the Caribbean Ocean.
The beach is a simple two minute walk down a winding path
and the village itself is just a four minute walk away. Here fresh fish,
vegetables, home-made bread and general necessities can be
found each day.
Combine the daily aerial display of pelicans, frigate birds,
green parrots, osprey, and hummingbirds with observations of
life on the beach, fishing, and even manta rays in the bay.
Access to the main house and Fisherman’s Lodge is via a grass
path that winds up the hill for around 70 yards from the
beach and the road. This sustains the unspoilt and natural
environment around the house. Neither the house or Fisherman’s
Lodge are suitable for anyone who is infirm or not able
to walk.
In the summer of 2003 we acquired an
additional half acre of land
next to the house. We landscaped this with grassy paths,
citrus trees, palms, and fragrant shrubs and flowers. This
has enhanced the immediate environment of the house and
Fisherman’s Lodge, in keeping with the rainforest setting.
The garden will quickly mature into a feast for the
eyes and will be a haven for wildlife, birds in particular. More
planting is planned for summer 2004, as well as the creation
of sitting areas to encourage pausing and contemplation.
